AbstractThe VENUS (Victoria Experimental Network Under the Sea) project offers a new way of studying the ocean. VENUS makes use of Internet and telecommunications technology to create a permanent link to monitoring instruments on the seafloor. This gives scientists and the public an ongoing way of monitoring the ocean environment. VENUS delivers real time information from the seafloor via fibre optic cables connected to instruments to the University of Victoria, BC, where they are archived. The primary function of the VENUS observatory and its website is to deliver data, data products, and imagery to both the public and scientific communities to facilitate ocean research.
